“They Were in Captivity”

There is an important pronoun change in verse 5

Alma begins by stating that “they” (the ancestors of his Nephite audience) were in captivity, but then turns the tables by using the first person plural pronoun “we.” His little history lesson is not academic: It is designed to help the Nephites understand how they, like their ancestors, have been established by God but have strayed from the truth.
