“In This Valley the Nephites Did Pitch Their Tents for the Night”

W. Cleon Skousen

Although the Nephites finally put the Amlicites to flight, the Nephites followed them southward, slaying as many as possible. When nightfall forced the two armies to separate and pitch their tents, Alma apparently had his officers go back and count the casualties on both sides. It had really been a terrible slaughter. They counted 12,522 Amlicites who had been slain and 6,562 Nephites.

Alma wisely sent spies to see whether the Amlicites would steal away in the night, and if so, which way they would go. When these spies returned they had the worst possible news.
