“The Lord Did Strengthen the Hand of the Nephites”

Brant Gardner

Redaction: Mormon gives the Amlicites credit for their partial success in their disadvantaged position of fighting uphill against a defended position. However, Mormon juxtaposes this success against the Nephites’ eventual victory. He casts the ultimate battle as between Yahweh and those who oppose his people. The Amlicites (a godless people in Mormon’s eyes) seek to destroy the way of the Nephites. They are militarily mighty, perhaps mightier than the Nephites, who apparently are in danger of losing the battle despite their superior tactical position. But the battle turns on the Yahweh’s intervention in “strengthen[ing] the hand of the Nephites.” The Amlicites were mighty in and of themselves, but the Nephites were mighty only after Yahweh strengthened them.
