“The Burden Should Come Upon All the People”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

We believe that governments were instituted of God for the benefit of man; and that he holds men accountable for their acts in relation to them, both in making laws and administering them, for the good and safety of society (D&C 134:1). Further, the responsibility for identifying and selecting good men and women to represent them and serve them in government rests with the people. To the Saints of the latter days, the Master said: “I, the Lord God, make you free, therefore ye are free indeed; and the law also maketh you free. Nevertheless, when the wicked rule the people mourn. Wherefore, honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold; otherwise whatsoever is less than these cometh of evil.” (D&C 98:8-10.)
