The reason for the sons of Mosiah refusing to take the kingdom is not given, but it was implied earlier. Their desire to make restitution for their own sins, and to bring the Lamanites to the truth was their primary goal (Mosiah 28:2–3). They recognized the value of eternal life as much more important than power or position in this life (28:4).
