“My Soul Was Racked with Eternal Torment”

Brant Gardner

Alma2 contrasts his pre-redemption darkness and tribulation with “an everlasting burning.” He clearly (v. 28) contrasts being “nigh unto death” with being “born of God” and, as a result, now being a “son” of the Savior (Mosiah 5:7).

Variant: The printer’s manuscript reads: “my soul was wrecked with eternal torment.” Skousen notes that wrecked and racked are phonetically similar and that the parallel passages consistently have racked. The change to racked was first made by Orson Pratt for the 1879 edition and has been retained in the LDS editions of the Book of Mormon.
