“It is I That Hath Created Them”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

This reference to the creation of man is another illustration of Jesus Christ speaking by divine investiture of authority-speaking on behalf of the Father. Through Isaiah, Jehovah spoke: “Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, … I have made the earth, and created man upon it” (Isaiah 45:11-12).

Similarly, in a modern revelation Joseph Smith was told that Jesus Christ is “the life of men and the light of men,” and that the worlds were made by him and that “men were made by him” (D&C 93:9-10; compare Alma 5:15; Ether 3:15-16). It is true that Jehovah, assisted by noble and great ones, created the heavens, the earth, and all things upon it.

When it came to the creation of man, however-the crowning creative achievement-there was a change in Creators. In the spirit and again in the flesh, man was created by God the Father. (See commentary on 2 Nephi 9:26; Promised Messiah, pp. 62-63.)
