Culture: The Lamanites may have had a naming convention similar to that of early Nephite kings, in which the king received the throne-name Nephi (Jacob 1:11). This verse documents two subsequent Lamans, but the very fact that the record specifies that “Laman” was a name in each case argues against the parallel. (See commentary accompanying Mosiah 9:10.) Indeed, when Mosiah1 left the city of Nephi, he also abandoned the throne-name tradition. Perhaps the Lamanites had also done so or perhaps never adopted the convention. In any event, it is clear that Laman1 was a venerated ancestor in this royal family. It seems highly doubtful that a Nephite would have been named Laman nor Lemuel or, in parallel fashion, that a Lamanite would have been named Nephi.
