“He Also Sent Forth Their Wives”

The pleas of the women were effective, as they had been in the Lehi-Nephi example. In Mosiah 19:14 the ostensible reason was the women’s beauty, here their identity as Lamanites. In both cases, however, the essentials are the same. Women plead for mercy, and the surrender of their men is accepted, binding the males in a formally subordinate position. Apparently, neither group in either example anticipated bellicose action.

Variant: The initial phrase “It came to pass that” was included in the printer’s manuscript and the 1830 edition. It was edited out in making corrections to the printer’s manuscript and does not appear in any subsequent printed edition.
