As an editorial comment, Mormon once more brings the reader to the subject of bondage into which Alma’s people fell after prospering in the land of Helam. Mormon depicted their afflictions as a chastening of the Lord and a trial of their patience and faith (the unconditional prophecy). He further declared that those who trusted in the Lord would be lifted up at the last day. He also said that Alma’s people fell into bondage, a fulfillment of Abinadi’s prophecy to another part of the people (Mosiah 12:2). Mormon gives us the precept of chapter 13 in these verses summarized here as “none could deliver them but … the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Mosiah 23:23). Although Mormon’s declaration is similar to King Limhi’s formula, we will follow the king’s formula to show how and when Limhi’s people were delivered (see figure 2 on page 460).
