“The Lord Did Strengthen Them”

Brant Gardner

Alma’s account states that Yahweh warned Alma of the army’s approach (Mosiah 18:34, 23:1). With such divine protection, it is not surprising that Yahweh would also assist in their travel. Alma’s people, traveling with families and flocks, managed to outdistance a military expedition, or at least move away with sufficient speed that the army could not find them. This protection resembles that enjoyed by the fleeing Limhites. Alma’s group had repented as part of their community formation. By the time the Limhites left Lehi-Nephi, they, too, had been humbled, had repented, and had covenanted with Yahweh. Yahweh protected both.
