“They Were in Number About Four Hundred and Fifty Souls”

W. Cleon Skousen

The advantage of having a prophet is to be warned in advance of pending dangers. When Alma was told by the Lord that the king's army was planning to raid their settlement at the waters of Mormon, all of the congregation quickly organized themselves with their flocks and possessions so they could escape into the mountainous wilderness just north of their meeting place. The record says that as Alma and his congregation departed they number a total of 450 souls.
