“That They Should Observe the Sabbath Day”

Brant Gardner

It is not clear why Mormon took the time to record this particular commandment of Alma to his people. We would expect that they observed the Sabbath routinely, as part of their observance of the Mosaic law. Perhaps this practice had become corrupted along with other concepts? Even if this were the case, Sabbath observance did not divide the week into secular and religious days, for on other days they were also to give thanks to Yahweh. Alma’s people were to renew their covenant to be Yahweh’s people. They honored the Sabbath, but every day honored Yahweh.
