“The Coming of the Messiah”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

No prophecy is repeated more often in the scriptures than Moses’ promise relative to the coming of Christ (see Deuteronomy 18:18-19). Peter quoted it in these words: “For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people,” (Acts 3:22-23.)

Stephen quoted it to the Sanhedrin that put him to death (Acts 7:37); Lehi and Nephi both quoted it to their families (1 Nephi 10:4; 1 Nephi 22:20-21): Christ quoted it to the nation of the Nephites (3 Nephi 21:11); Moroni quoted it to Joseph Smith (Joseph Smith History 1:40); and we find it referred to in the Doctrine and Covenants (D&C 1:14; D&C 133:63).
