“The Ten Commandments”

Brant Gardner

Abinadi quotes these verses to complete the foundation for his challenge to the priests’ declaration that they teach the law of Moses (Mosiah 12:28). Abinadi begins by reciting the compact form of the law of Moses.

Text: In the 1830 edition, a chapter break occurs here. While this separation seems awkward to the modern reader because it interrupts a continuous speech, it nevertheless seems to be consistent with one of Mormon’s most regular editorial practices. Up to this point, he is quoting his source. At the quotation’s end and before Mormon interjects his own explanation, the chapter ends.

Translation: These verses are included with no changes except spelling from the King James Version (for example, “shewing/showing,” “neighbour/neighbor”).
