“Thou Shalt Not Make Unto Thee Any Graven Image”

Brant Gardner

Abinadi forces home his point. They should believe in the one God who brought his children from bondage in Egypt and gave the law to Moses; but they do not. In essence, he is accusing them of blasphemy.

Text: The chapter break in the 1879 edition at this point is unfortunate. The 1830 edition continues without interruption, thus not allowing a conceptual gap between Abinadi’s remarkable accusation and its effect on the priests. This chapter should always be read with the next one to retain the power of the argument and drama of the situation.
