“We Have Brought a Man Before Thee”

Brant Gardner

This scene shows an orderly society responding to disorder in an orderly way. While Mormon’s portrait of Noah’s people is highly unsympathetic, his censoriousness stems from his religious perspective. From their own perspective, they are not a disorderly and impulsive mob; they recognize proper authority and make formal complaints with which the law can deal. Despite Abinadi’s threats against the king and the society, he will not be executed without a trial.
