Text: Although verse 3 reports that Abinadi compared Noah’s life to a garment in a hot furnace, these reports include two additional images of fragility and impermanence. Whether the original text split up the details as they appear in these two reports or whether Mormon simply emphasized the garment in the furnace because he knew that death by fire would, in fact, be Noah’s fate, we cannot tell. I tend to see Mormon as underscoring the image of the garment to stress how exactly Abinadi’s prophecy was fulfilled.
