“Nephi Was More Faithful in Keeping the Commandments of the Lord”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

Behold, the Lord esteemeth all flesh in one; he that is righteous is favored of God. ... And he loveth those who will have him to be their God. Behold, he loved our fathers, and he covenanted with them, yea, even Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and he remembered the covenants which he had made (1 Nephi 17:35, 40; see also Alma 28:13). Of Hyrum Smith, a man of like spirit to the prophets of old, the Lord said: “I, the Lord, love him because of the integrity of his heart, and because he loveth that which is right before me” (D&C 124:15). All who choose to live as such men have lived will receive the same favor of the Lord, whereas, “if you keep not my commandments,” Christ said, “the love of the Father shall not continue with you, therefore you shall walk in darkness” (D&C 95:12).
