“Twentyfour Plates of Pure Gold”

Monte S. Nyman

Limhi’s desire to have the twenty-four plates of pure gold interpreted or translated was fulfilled by Mosiah after they were delivered out of bondage to Zarahemla (see Mosiah 28:17). The people identified in the plates were the Jaredites, as known in the Book of Mormon (see Moroni 9:23). Moroni gives us a brief abridgment of these records later, called the book of Ether in the Book of Mormon. We will not discuss them in any detail here.

The land where the bones, plates, and weapon remains were discovered was north of Zarahemla. The forty-three men sent out by Limhi (Mosiah 8:7) apparently passed their destination and went farther north. How far north they went is not known, but a land to the north that had “many waters” is mentioned several times in the Book of Mormon (see Alma 50:29; Helaman 3:3–4; Mormon 6:4). (A correlation with modern geography will not be made here.)
