The people who had gone back up to the land of Nephi (or Lehi-Nephi) had seen three generations of wickedness. They had slain a prophet of the Lord, Abinadi, and the reason they had slain him was ostensibly because he taught that man was created in the image of God and that God himself would come down and live among men.
