Whosoever Taketh Upon Himself the Name of Christ Shall Be Found Upon the Right Hand of God

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

Whosoever assumes (takes upon himself) the name of Christ and thereupon covenants to serve Him and keep the Lord's commandments will be protected and supported by the power of God.

The word hand is sometimes used for power, as in 1 Sam. 5:6-7. This is especially the case where the expression right hand is used.

To pour water on any one's hand, meant to serve him, 2 Kgs. 3:11.

To wash one's hands, denoted that the person was innocent of crime, Matt. 27:24.

To kiss one's hand is an act of adoration, Job 31:27.

To lift up one's hand was a posture used in praying for a blessing, Lev. 9:22.

To lift up the hand against one, is to rebel against him, 2 Sam. 20:21.

To give one's hand, means to swear friendship, to promise security, to make alliance, II Kings 10: 15.

The right hand denotes power or strength. The scripture generally imputes to God's right hand all the effects of his omnipotence, 20:6;44:3.

Often, to be at one's right hand signifies to defend, to protect, to support, 109:31. (Cruden's Concordance of the Bible)

In the Book of Mormon the expression, right hand, is used with the same meaning as it has in the Bible. So that the reader may obtain a fuller understanding of the phrase, we render a complete list of its usage in the Sacred Record.
