“A Mighty Change in Us or in Our Hearts”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

The mighty change of heart referenced here comes as a result of covenant commitment. The Spirit of the Lord can, if we are submissive and easily entreated, bring about a mighty change in our hearts. If we seek the Spirit, we will change and lose the desire to do evil. The people of King Benjamin believe his words as the Holy Spirit manifests the truth unto them, causing a mighty change to take place in their hearts. Let us likewise seek to know the truth by the power of the Holy Spirit. It will show us all things to do (see 2 Nephi 32:5) and testify of the truth of all things (see Moroni 10:5)—thus we will be blessed to receive and maintain the mighty change of heart. President Ezra Taft Benson spoke of this change as follows:

When we have undergone this mighty change, which is brought about only through faith in Jesus Christ and through the operation of the Spirit upon us, it is as though we have become a new person. Thus the change is likened to a new birth. Thousands of you within the sound of my voice have experienced this change. You have forsaken lives of sin, sometimes deep and offensive sin, and through applying the blood of Christ in your lives, have become clean. You have no more disposition to return to your old ways. You are in reality a new person. This is what is meant by a change of heart. (The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1988], 470)
