“Desiring to Know”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

7. Though the new birth is a result of a definite time of decision—a desire for the things of righteousness- it is usually a quiet but powerful process. It is true that certain individuals such as Alma (Mosiah 27; Alma 36), Paul (Acts 9), or King Lamoni (Alma 18-19) underwent dramatic and miraculously sudden conversions. They were born again through a singular experience. And no doubt others, even in our day, change from weakness to strength in a wondrous fashion. These, however, are exceptions rather than the rule. There are few sudden disciples, few instant Christians. The Holy Ghost generally makes Saints out of sinners “in process of time”. Of Christ our Prototype the revelations attest: “He received not of the fulness” (D&C 93:13).
