“D Your Thoughts and Your Words, and Your Deeds”

Jana Reiss

This verse reiterates a theme that is explored elsewhere in Christian scripture: people will be judged not just by their deeds but also by their innermost thoughts. This points to the fact that our thoughts shape who we are spiritually; God is interested in our interior lives as well as our outward actions. As Proverbs 23:7 suggests, a person becomes what he or she thinks. Salvation is not simply behavioral, but fully ontological.
