“Retaining a Remission of Your Sins”

Jana Reiss

Benjamin clarifies the reasons why people should take care of the poor. It’s not just because it’s a “nice” thing to do; it’s necessary if they wish to “retain a remission” of their sins. Essentially, Benjamin wants his listeners to put their faith into action. It’s not enough to repent and be forgiven of sins; Christ’s followers have to then put divine love into action by living lives of service. This is part of what it means to “walk guiltless” before God.
