“The Atonement Which Has Been Prepared from the Foundation of the World”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

“Book of Mormon prophets describe salvation as the journey of a lifetime rather than the ecstasy of a given moment. They use the word salvation as a synonym for eternal life, that which we would refer to as exaltation.” 15 The central theme of these verses is that the atonement of Jesus Christ has been “prepared from the foundation of the world.” Likewise, the atonement is the foundation of the Father’s plan of salvation. It is not ancillary to, an add-on for, or an adjustment of the “real” plan. The Atonement was established in the eternity before this world came into being. And by it many worlds now stand, and many worlds have already passed away and are exalted (Moses 1:35). The Atonement is the core of eternal existence (Alma 13:3).
