“He Shall Cast Out Devils”

Brant Gardner

While most of the catalog of Jesus’s ministry is unsurprising, this statement shows that Benjamin continues to adapt the angel’s message to his people’s needs. Nephi had also recorded that Jesus would cast out devils (1 Ne. 11:31); but Benjamin has added a definition. While Old World “devils” are particular spirit entities that enter a person to cause physical, mental, and emotional distress, Benjamin expands “devils” to include “evil spirits.” He is thus reminding his listeners of “the evil spirit” he earlier applied to those who followed the local religion (Mosiah 2:32, 37). In other words, Benjamin is stressing the function of the “devils/evil spirits” in causing spiritual illness, rather than physical ailments, making this function of Jesus’ mission directly relevant to his people. The name of the Messiah will have power to cast that “evil spirit” out from among them. The contentions over alternate religions will be cast from their midst.
