“Devils or the Evil Spirits”

Brant Gardner

While most of the catalog of Jesus’ ministry is unsurprising, this particular verse shows that Benjamin continues to use the message of the angel in adaptation to his very specific need. That Jesus will cast out devil we know. What is added is an intercalated definition. While the Old World “devils” are particular spirit entities that enter a person to cause a physical illness, Benjamin explicitly links the “devils” to “evil spirits.” Why make such a distinction? Precisely because he has used “evil spirit” as the definition of those who would follow the alternate religion (see Mosiah 2:32 and Mosiah 2:37). For Benjamin, the “devils/evil spirits” are a spiritual illness, not a physical one. Benjamin is pointing this particular function of Jesus’ mission directly at his people. The name of Jesus will be able to cast that “evil spirit” from them – and the contentions over the alternate religion will be cast from their midst.

Internal Reference: 1 Nephi 11:31 specifically mentions the casting out of devils.
