“A Wo Pronounced Upon Him Who Listeth to Obey That Spirit”

Brant Gardner

Benjamin sets up a contrast between the “wo” attached to obeying the evil spirit and the “prosperity” attached to obeying Yahweh. In each case, the human action has an accompanying response from the extra-human (Yahweh or the evil spirit). Benjamin then goes into detail about the nature of that woe. It occurs when the sinner has not repented and thus “dieth in his sins,” inevitably to reap the “reward” of “damnation to his own soul.” This warning is tailored to Benjamin’s people, for they understand Yahweh’s will. Will they choose to go against it, especially when their behavior is currently acceptable (v. 31: “Continue to do as ye have hitherto done”)?
