“Ye Are Only in the Service of Your God”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

This is one of the most famous maxims in the Book of Mormon. It declares the equivalency of service to man and service to God. In its parallelism, it is reminiscent of the Savior’s statement about the great commandment in the law: “Jesus said unto him [an inquiring lawyer among the Pharisees who tempted Him], Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Matthew 22:37–39).
