The king wanted his people to understand that he was not a bigger-than-life ruler but was only a mortal man. He was not ruling over them as did the pharaohs and other tyrantswho had lorded over their subjects. “I am like as yourselves, subject to all manner of infirmities in body and mind; yet I have been chosen by this people, and consecrated by my father, and was suffered by the hand of the Lord” to be a ruler and a king. Here the word “suffered” means allowed.
