“The Words Which He Spake Should Be Written and Sent Forth”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

The king takes steps to ensure that his words are accessible to all assembled. When the tower is not adequate to the task, he causes his words to be written and disseminated—the first ensign in the New World! It is instructive that Ammon, the leader of the exploratory group from Zarahemla that is soon to discover the people of Limhi, has with him a copy of Benjamin’s speech, which he reads to the colonists (see Mosiah 8:3). Thus the Book of Mormon peoples are favored to have excerpts from the words of the prophets in written format from time to time, even though they have no published editions of the scriptures as we do today.
