Why was Mosiah warned to leave the land of Nephi?

Thomas R. Valletta

“Mosiah’s departure fulfilled the prophecy of Jacob (Jacob 3:4) and verified Nephi’s words that the Lord ‘leadeth away the righteous into precious lands’ (1 Ne. 17:38). The Book of Mormon is silent concerning the fate of the Nephites who remained behind in the land of Nephi.” Later, however, we learn how the departure of Mosiah blessed another people. “Mosiah and his people were directed by God through a wilderness to the city and to the people of Zarahemla. … The people of Zarahemla rejoiced ‘because the Lord had sent the people of Mosiah with the plates of brass’ (Omni 1:14). Mosiah had the Nephite language taught to the people of Zarahemla” (Largey, Book of Mormon Reference Companion, 569).
