Why do prophets often “prick [our] hearts with the word?

Thomas R. Valletta

“Jarom speaks with no timidity on the manner in which the Nephite prophets delivered the message of the Lord. They ‘threaten the people’ in such a manner, he said, as to ‘prick their hearts.’ To the obedient the book of Jarom promised the blessings of protection; to the disobedient it prophesied destruction … .

“‘The word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword, to the dividing asunder of both joints and marrow’ (D&C 6:2)” (McConkie and Millet, Doctrinal Commentary, 2:105–10).
