Enos 1:20 Textual Variants

Royal Skousen
and I [bear 1BCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRST|bare A] record that the people of Nephi did seek diligently to restore the Lamanites unto the true faith in God

As discussed under 1 Nephi 14:29, this use of the verb form bear should be interpreted as a presenttense form. Enos is speaking directly to us, his readers; thus the present-tense bear is appropriate. The 1830 typesetter replaced bear with the past-tense bare, but the 1837 edition reverted to the original, correct bear. Also see the discussion under bear in volume 3.
