“Reclaim and Restore the Lamanites to the Knowledge of the Truth”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

This is one of the most human and evocative passages in the Book of Mormon as Jacob expressed his reflections on his life and work. Efforts were made to reclaim the Lamanites but to no avail. In his old age, Jacob looked back and expressed a sentiment that appears to be quite natural as the years pass—life seems like a dream. He then described the hardships he had endured. Many of the faithful Saints of every dispensation have felt as Jacob did; they have looked to, and longed for, a return to our eternal home, confessing that we are “strangers and pilgrims on the earth” (Hebrews 11:13). The righteous, we venture, are destined to experience this divine homesickness.
