“Hewn Down and Cast into the Fire”

Jana Reiss

The idea of the wicked being “hewn down” and “cast into the fire” is obviously hewoffensive to many, but the allegory suggests here that this is the eventual fate of only those who stubbornly and actively resist God’s every effort at reconciliation. Note that the verse begins with a restatement of how grieved God is that the wicked must be destroyed in the last days.
