Literature: This is a formal lament. The Lord of the vineyard repeats that his efforts to salvage his tree have failed. He catalogs his efforts. This background climaxes in the poignant question at the end: How has this occurred? Despite the lord’s best efforts, the tree appears to be lost. Obviously the master cannot be blamed for lack of effort. Who then is to blame?
