“Hear the Words of Me”

Brant Gardner

This is Zenos’s introduction to his allegory although stated with some grammatical awkwardness (“hear the words of me”). The prophet does not declare his own name, but Jacob does. The significance of this introduction is not his name but rather his declaration that he is speaking as a prophet. In much the same way, Isaiah did not repeat his self-introduction but reasserts his prophetic calling as a seal upon the text that follows (Isa. 1:1, 2:1, 13:1, 38:1).
