“All These Witnesses We Obtain a Hope”

Brant Gardner

Again, Jacob refers to himself as “we.” Perhaps he again means himself and Nephi, but that reading implies that the two brothers not only had the faith to move mountains but that they had done so. However, a more probable reading is that the first person plural pronoun is generic: “We” is all of the faithful who study the scriptures, thus “obtain[ing] a hope” and developing a faith that “becometh unshaken.” The power of that unshakable faith is a promise to all who use the scriptures to increase their faith, not just Nephi and Jacob.
