Apparently the "plates of Jacob" referred to here are the same set of plates referred to elsewhere as the small plates of Nephi. Jacob admits these plates were "made by the hand of Nephi." (Jacob 3:14.) Evidently they are now called the plates of Jacob because the historian who is writing on the plates is now Jacob.
