“Delight in the Chastity of Women”

Brant Gardner

Jacob began by declaring that the Nephite men were causing whoredoms. Now Jacob very specifically says that the current law from the Lord that prohibits more than one wife protects the chastity of women. The problem with that reasoning is that the definition of chastity expects the ability to discern the status of the relationship inside/outside of law. If a woman is truly married, her "chastity" is not a problem, as sexual activity inside of the legal marriage is expected and never condemned. Just as we saw with Jacob's use of whoredom, there is a complex problem here that deals with the legal definitions of marriage, and a legally and religiously sanctioned marriage has no "whoredom" between the partners, nor is a woman "unchaste" if she has sexual relations only with her legal husband.
