Many of those who afflict or persecute their neighbors do so unwittingly. They fail to recognize “the things which God hath given [them]” as coming from him (v. 20). They fail to recognize “his hand in all things” (D&C 59:21). Furthermore, they do not understand that all men were created to keep the commandments of God, which would bring glory to God and to themselves (Jacob 2:21; see also D&C 132:21; Moses 1:39). They also fail to recognize “the worth of souls is great in the sight of God” (D&C 18:10). How much more abominable before God it is for those who know and understand these things and still become lifted up in pride.
