“You Have Afflicted Your Neighbor”

Rhetoric: Jacob directs a specific and personal question at his audience. Of course, he does not expect an answer, but he does expect that the question will lead to self-examination and perhaps repentance. In addressing those who “have afflicted your neighbor, and persecuted him,” Jacob reveals that Nephite society has now begun to tolerate the active persecution of one’s social inferiors.
