“Before Ye Seek for Riches Seek Ye for the Kingdom of God”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

Personal purity is largely a product of priority, the singleness of spiritual vision. Where one’s treasure is, there will his heart be also (Matthew 6:21). Before seeking monetary success, it would be well if his or her heart were first focused away from self-gratification, toward those things that matter most -the care of the children of God and the establishment of the kingdom of God.

“Seek Ye for the Kingdom of God”

The establishment of Zion -a society of the pure in heart (D&C 97:21), a holy commonwealth wherein there is no poor to be found-has been and must be the righteous obsession of the Saints in any age. The Lord desires “that every man may improve upon his talent, that every man may gain other talents, yea, even air hundred fold, to be cast into the Lord’s storehouse, to become the common property of the whole church-every man seeking the interest of his neighbor, and doing all things with an eye single to the glory of God” (D&C 82:18-19). Thus the clarion call of the Master echoes through the centuries and provides the foundation upon which the prudent chart their course in life: “Wherefore, seek not the things of this world but seek ye first to build up the kingdom of God, and to establish his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” (JST, Matthew 6:38, italics added).
