Thoughts; Wickedness of Your Hearts

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

By the power of discernment, Jacob perceives the hidden agenda of his people as they begin to slide into sin. Our thoughts and feelings are the gateway to our actions. Great blessings attend pure devotion to the Lord; great sorrow stems from pride, greed, and unrighteousness. The gift of discernment is often reflected in the events of the Book of Mormon. Amulek perceives the thoughts of his detractors (see Alma 10:17). Alma reads the thoughts of Zeezrom (see Alma 12:7). Ammon is able to discern the thoughts of King Lamoni (see Alma 18:18). The Lord reads the thoughts of the three disciples (see 3 Nephi 28:6). The gift of discernment enables leaders to detect inward patterns of thinking and thus be of service to others in guiding them onto the pathway of righteousness.
