Jacob describes his personal pain in being required to be so explicit about a subject he finds emotionally and spiritually distressing. Jacob is sufficiently righteous that he has seen a vision of the Messiah (2 Ne. 11:3). Thus, the contrast between Yahweh’s goodness and his listeners’ sins is tremendous: a gap that Jacob not only knows intellectually but keenly feels.
