Sometime before Nephi died, he appointed Jacob and Joseph, his brothers, to the office of priest in the Holy Order of God. At the death of Nephi, Jacob succeeded him as the leader and head of the spiritual concerns of the people. Another was appointed to rule over their civil affairs.
