“Ye Need Not Suppose That It Contains All My Words”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

Among the worst of sectarian heresies is the idea that the Bible contains all the word of God. Concluding his Gospel, John wrote,

“And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written” (John 21:25).

Whether John made reference to the breadth and volume of Jesus' deeds and teachings or to the sacred nature of them, the conclusion is the same- the word of God cannot be confined to books, let alone to a single book.
